This review is a bit of a “slow train coming” (title of an interesting album from Bob Dylan) as I had a sample of a new generation technology fly rod that Kilwell launched in late 2014 . The model was a 9ft 6 inch 8 weight in 4 pieces. I fished with it on three occasions, the last and most notable being chronicled in my post Shallow Water Kingfish .
My friend Alan Bulmer has also reviewed the rod on his site (http://activeanglingnz.com/2015/03/27/kilwell-xantu-96-8-weight-rod-review/) and was keen for me to give it a go before it was forwarded onto another candidate for review.
First some images!
The blank is made by Kilwell in their Rotorua factory incorporating Xantu.Layer material developed by Revolution Fibres , a nano technology company based in West Auckland. This gives it increased strength, up to twice as strong as conventional construction, with no perceptible increase in weight. In a saltwater scenario this means a lighter rod can handle the same loads as a much heavier one.
