Saltwater fly fishing around Auckland

Sometimes it’s about exploring for new fishing spots – and Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour is full of potential with extensive shallow water flats, volcanic reefs, sand banks and channels that can play host to mullet, flounder, kahawai and maybe even trevally or kingfish. It’s all part of the fun!

Fantastic info and photos fellas. Any places around the Auckland CBD/viaduct you could recommend for a visiting overseas swoffa (with no transport)? Just not sure where to go with all those expensive boats moored around the place!

    • Hi, flyfishing in and around the CBD wharves would be near impossible as all easy access points are probably only for boat passengers. The closest spots I’d recommend would be either under the Harbour Bridge on the sea wall of the marina at high tide. Another would be in the opposite direction, on the sea wall rocks by the heliport next to the container terminal. High tide would be best and find a spot with a bit of current to stir up the fish.
If you have internet access try a search for up to date information of the Saltwater Flyflingers thread at
      Hope that helps!
